Sept 1- 2, 2010 at the Guggenheim Museum in New York

'TechFocus I: Caring for Video Art', a two-day workshop presented by The Foundation of the American Institute for Conservation and the Electronic Media Group.

Supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, this inaugural workshop is starting a series of four planned workshops on the preservation and presentation of electronic art, acknowledging the 10th anniversary of the ground-breaking 'TechArchaeology' symposium held at SFMOMA.

This event aims to acquaint participants with the technical functionality of both analog and digital video art as well as the technical and aesthetic impact of digitization, compression and format migration.

A comparative ‘school of seeing’ will be offered to sensitize the participant’s eye for image structure and quality.

The second day sessions focus on the varieties of display modes of video art in an exhibition context and demonstrate the impact of equipment selection on the integrity of the artwork. Curators, conservators and technicians will provide insight into their decision-making processes and discuss their perspectives on the variability of video art installations.

The program is organized by the AIC Electronic Media Group and the TechFocus Planning Committee.

Affordable Mannequins : Inexpensive, Quick, Easy-to-Make, Reusable, Artifact-Friendly, Custom-Made Mannequins Workshop

Do your mannequins look sad? Do they have fingers missing and limbs askew? Is your mannequin against a wall to hide the backside? Do you have to draw a mustache on female forms to display your men's uniforms? Is your newest mannequin from the 1970s when the local department store closed? If you said yes to one or more of these questions, then this workshop is for you!

Historic clothing requires properly sized mannequins to achieve the appropriate look while supporting the garment. Here's the rub: commercial store mannequins are often the wrong size, wrong shape and made from poor quality materials; purchased, custom-made mannequins are while having a great fit and are made from quality materials are expensive; and most museum-made mannequins require a lot of time and artistic talent to create.

A solution for those doing an exhibit with a tight budget and tight schedule is the pole mannequin. This mannequin is easily made from artifact safe, everyday materials that your museum may have on hand and/or can purchase at local stores.

Participants will come away with: · An understanding of the importance of the right fit for historic garments · A knowledge of materials safe to use with historic clothing · Sources for inexpensive and possibly free materials · Projects for your volunteers, young and old · Hands on opportunity to make a mannequin · A scaled mannequin to take back to your museum
